Cowboys planned to win by forcing Brady to throw?

October 16th, 2007

Let me get this straight … Wade Phillips came up with the game plan to beat the Patriots by shutting down the run and forcing Tom Brady to beat them? Seriously?

You want to focus on Sammy Morris, who could walk into most offices in Boston – wearing his jersey – and wouldn’t be recognized. And you want to force one of the top QBs in NFL history to throw the ball?

I’m sorry, I’m still not picking this up. Your strategy is to force the number one passing offense in the NFL into passing on you? The QB who leads the league in passing TDs and is on pace to break the all-time record? And you want to win that way?

Huh. OK.

I’m not sure the rope-a-dope works in the NFL. I’m not sure you can hope to win simply by waiting Brady out and hoping that his arm gets tired. That his receivers get worn out from running up and down the field on you.

But, hey, what the hell do I know. Wade, you’ve got Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings this week. They are the number one running attack in the NFL, led by the top rusher in the league. So I assume your plan will be to shut down their 28th ranked passing offense and force Peterson to run.

Quit crying BCS haters

October 15th, 2007

Like most sane people, I want a college football playoff system and I’d like to dump the BCS. That said people need to layoff the computer rankings that have USF #2. People cried for years (rightly so) that polls are biased. Well, there’s nothing biased about a computer. It just processes the facts.

Arizona Cardinals sign Whisenhunt as new head coach

January 14th, 2007

Wow. Well, I’m surprised. I really thought the Steelers would hire him. But, in a move that I’m sure surprised more than just me, Ken Whisenhunt has signed on to become the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Of all the places, I just didn’t see him in Arizona because of their history of bad decisions on the part of their owner. Still, it makes sense. He’s an offensive guy and they have a ton of talent on that side of the ball. I’m sure Matt Leinart and his trio of very talented receivers are no doubt very excited to see what he can bring to that offense.

Wonder who he’ll bring in to coach the D?

Reggie Bush gets lit up

January 14th, 2007

Reggie Bush had a great game in helping the Saints advance to the NFC Championship. But his day didn’t start out great. On the second play of the game, Sheldon Brown just knocks him the F out. Bush tried to get up from it, but fell back down and then tried to crawl off the field. Check out the video.

Merry Christmas, T.O.

December 25th, 2006

Ah, it warms my heart to read that T.O. and the Cowboys got slapped around by Philadelphia and Jeff Garcia. It must just sting the hell out of T.O. to know that his new team – the one that was considered a lock for the Super Bowl when they signed him – was beaten by the team who tossed him out. And worst of all, that team was led by Jeff Garcia – the QB from San Francisco who he blasted as he left town. He called the man gay, and said that Garcia owed his career to him.

I also loved reading “Dallas also was hurt by Terrell Owens dropping a perfectly thrown deep pass on the series right after Philadelphia’s final field goal” and “loudly boo Owens for another drop with 3:07 left”. Of course, neither drop really mattered that much. The game wasn’t close. Still, it’s great.

UPDATE: AAAH, poor T.O. It appears that the whole reason they lost and that he isn’t playing well is because they aren’t going to him early enough. Never mind that he’s dropped more passes this season than any other WR in the league. The drops are because he isn’t getting the ball early enough. Hell, no one needs the ball late; it’s early in the game that counts. Remember Michael Jordan? He never wanted the ball at the end of the game. As long as he scored in the first period, he was fine.

Whatever, T.O.

Bucs trade McFarland for 2nd round pick

October 17th, 2006

What the F? Why the hell would we give up Booger for a second round pick?! Especially a low one like we’re likely to get back from the Colts.

Was this a personal favor to Tony Dungy or something? Were Gruden and General Manager Bruce Allen just trying to better motivate our struggling defense by trading away one of the few good players we have left? Are they just determined to kill off the soul of the Bucs and rebuild it totally?

Our offense is extremely young, and our defense is extremely thin (and aging) because we’ve neglected them in the draft ever since Gruden arrived. So, in that context, I think it makes perfect sense to give up one of our best defenders for a low second round pick and sign a Cornerback who is so injury-prone that the lowly Houstan Texans cut him.

Can we please just get rid of Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber so that I can find a new favorite team. I’m getting really tired of this junk. Maybe I can be a Jags fan?

Raiders suspend Porter for 4 games

October 14th, 2006

I was on the Raiders side in that Porter should shut up and play, but he’s been quiet the first four games and yet it’s going to be at least another four before he plays.

I don’t get it. What has he done now? Randy Moss is the one I keep hearing asking for a trade. Running his mouth. I haven’t heard anything from Porter. So what gives with a four-game suspension on top of already being deactivated for the first four games? The quote from Art Shell: “He’s working. It’s not that he’s not working. I’ve never said he hasn’t worked. He’s doing what he’s asked to do and you can’t ask for anything more than that.”

So that’s why you suspended him?

Whatever he’s done, perception is starting to swing in his favor. Many people are starting to look at how bad the Raiders are and how they have managed to underachieve with what little talent they have. They are looking at the fact that Al Davis is long past his prime in talent evaluation. Art Shell hasn’t been a coach in a long, long time before Davis found him and brought him back to Raider Nation. And their offensive coordinator, as Tony Kornheiser loves to say, has been running a bed-and-breakfast for the last eight years.

All of that is starting to make Porter look less like the idiot in this situation and more like another Marcus Allen. Never thought I’d say that.

T.O. isn’t getting along with his position coach … shocking

October 14th, 2006

We all saw the rants and screams on the sideline last week during the Cowboys loss to the Eagles. Then we heard how T.O. says the Boys could be 4-0 instead of 2-2 if they only threw him the ball more. Of course, ignoring the fact that he was thrown to 5 more times than the next closest receiver during the previous game. And that Bledsoe’s desire to force it to T.O. may very well have been the biggest reason for the interceptions.

Now it comes out that he’s had a blow-up with his position coach and says “there will be nothing else, no other dialogue” with his WR coach.

This is too awesome. Almost everyone – at least everyone smarter than Michael Irvin, which is nearly everyone – acknowledges this guy is a cancer. I think even Jerry Jones knows it. But he and most of the Dallas fans were hoping they could get a good year out of him first before he went off. If Jones threw enough money at him he’d keep his mouth shut long enough to make at least one Super Bowl run. Even I thought that might be the case – and I hate both he and the Cowboys.

But we may have all underestimated T.O. He may be worse than we thought. He made it several seasons at S.F. before he started fueding with the assistant coaches. With a few very minor exceptions, he had one really great season in Philly before the off-season stuff that eventually lead to his end there.

At Dallas, however, he’s 4 games in and already pulling this junk.

Ah. Is anyone else downright giddy at how well things are working out for the Cowboys and T.O.?

Say what, Madden?

October 8th, 2006

I really don’t get the appeal of John Madden. Some people seem to love this guy, but I’ve always thought he was a rambling idiot. Here are two things I heard him say within two minutes of each other when I flipped over to the game tonight.

“If you like coffee for dessert … er, if you like defense for dessert with your coffee, you’re sure getting it tonight aren’t you?”

and

“You know there’s a ways you can figure how many fingers between … the, the water and the, and the sun. And that tells you how long it’s going to be before sunset. Have you ever done that?”

Yeah, he’s brilliant. He makes George Bush look like a great speaker.
