“Alien” prequel is underway, continuing the Hollywood rehashing trend

July 31st, 2009

When Hollywood isn’t figuring out which completely unnecessary remake to trot out next (see: Footloose, set for release June 2010), they spend a lot of time working on “prequels.” It’s another great way to ride on the coattails of past success rather than creating something new. And, unlike the standard sequels, you don’t have to worry about resigning the lead characters to potentially high contracts.

That’s the only reason I can see to green light stuff like an “Alien” prequel.

Ridley Scott, director of the 1979 original, has signed on with 20th Century Fox to create a prequel to the series. His company Scott Free will also produce the film.

I guess three sequels plus the two Aliens vs. Predator movies just wasn’t enough.

Family Guy cast talks about next Star Wars episode

July 26th, 2009

At Comic-Con this week the Family Guy cast, including Seth MacFarlane, Seth Green, Mila Kunis and Alex Borstein, discussed next season’s episodes. The highlight, of course, being the Star Wars Empire Strikes Back themed episode.

Here are the notes from the Zap2It News blog:

  • The “Star Wars”-ish intro text: “A long time ago when the gays weren’t all in your face about it … “
  • Mocking “Family Guy” network FOX’s bad judgment, pointing to how it canceled the show twice!
  • Cameos by one of the Jetsons and a Muppet
  • A really freaky hybrid of a Tauntaun and a deceased comedian. It’s rather disturbing.
  • CG ships and AT-ATs
  • Stewie as a really cute Vader
  • “Something Something Dark Side” will hopefully air on Christmas, but that’s dependent on how much of it they get done. Genius takes time, people.

One other interesting note: “You WON’T see the ‘Family Guy’ abortion episode because it’s going straight to DVD. FOX encouraged them to produce the episode, but are too afraid to air it.”

Cops use pepper spray on aggressive groundhog

July 25th, 2009

I love that the cop tripped trying to get away. Like a horror movie victim.

Fri Jul 24, 8:30 pm ET

BOONTON, N.J. (AP) – Police in northern New Jersey needed pepper spray to thwart a groundhog on the attack. Boonton resident Alex Scott told police the rodent chased him when he entered his garage and tried to get his truck. Police Sgt. Mike Danyo and Officer Paul Ryan said the groundhog went on the attack when they arrived.

Police said Danyo tripped and fell. His partner sprayed pepper spray into the groundhog’s face, giving the officers time to snare it.

The animal was euthanized and its remains will be shipped to the state health department for rabies testing.
