Did the Cowboys overpay for Romo?

The Dallas Cowboys signed QB Tony Romo to a six-year, $67.5 million contract that makes him the third-highest paid QB (by annual salary) in the NFL - ahead of Tom Brady and Brett Favre. Is that too much?

Romo is definitely the new it-guy. He’s the QB of the Cowboys, which always makes you famous, and he’s a good QB in the league who’s not named Brady, Favre, or Manning. So I can see the fascination. But Dan Le Batard co-hosted PTI today and said “you can’t name five quarterbacks better.” Oh really?!

OK, how about: Peyton, Brady, Palmer, Brees, and Bulger. That’s five, plus I left out Hasselbeck and Big Ben, who I could also make a case for. In fact, if you told me that I had to win one game right now I would take McNabb or Favre over Romo too. But I realize that Romo is likely to be playing long after they are gone.

I think Romo is good and I actually don’t think the ‘Boys overpaid for him. I think they should have paid whatever he asked because he’s an established star with a ton of potential. But I’m not ready to put him among the top-5 QBs in the league yet.
