Google SMS is very handy

I’m meeting some co-workers today outside the office. Except I forgot my directions at the office. I know the name of the place where we are meeting, but the only thing I remember about how to get there is it’s behind a Sonny’s BBQ. I live about an hour from my office so going into the office first is out of the question.

Of course, a person with a normal Internet connection would just hop online and look up the Sonny’s location and how to get there. Unfortunately, I have Comcast and they have decided that I only need about 30 minutes of service per day - none of which comes in the late evening (when I remembered that I didn’t have the directions) or in the early morning before I need to head out. (Posting this via email.)

So I turned to my Sidekick. It’s Net connection is much too slow to try to pull down maps. But I can send quick text messages. So I sent a text to Google (46645) reading “Sonnys Roswell” - Roswell being the town outside Atlanta where we’re meeting. In a few seconds I had a message back with the address.

Ok, great. But I’m still not positive how to get there. Hmm… wonder if they have directions? So I sent another message to Google with “Directions: myaddress city, state to destination city, state”. Sure enough a few seconds later I had a text with turn-by-turn directions with the mile count next to each. Brilliant!

This probably isn’t new to some folks, but I had not visited Google.com/sms in quite a while so I haven’t the slightest what is available. I guess if Comcast grants me my connection back when they come out to the house tomorrow I’ll check to see what else is available through Google SMS.
