NFL Week 1 Notes (Monday edition)

When will Dan Snyder learn he can’t just buy a championship in the NFL. You can bring in the finishing touches, but not from top to bottom. Love the stat they threw out on MNF: From 1999 to 2004 the Skins acquired 21 players who had been to the Pro Bowl before going to Washington. None made it after arriving there. That’s awesome.

Last year they took it easy on the free agent wheel of fortune, but this offseason they were back to bringing in the big-name guys like Antwaan Randle El, Adam Archuleta, Brandon Lloyd, and Andre Carter. I have a feeling it’s not going to do them a lot of good. They may make the playoffs - may - but I doubt they will get much further.

Santana Moss got laid the F out! Darren Sharper took a touchdown off the scoreboard by just leveling Moss as soon as the ball got to him. It was right up there with Ray Lewis’ hit on the Michael Pittman.

Brad Johnson is the 40th paid QB in the NFL, according to the MNF crew. Wow, that surprises me a little. I know he was underpaid and had made that known. But I didn’t know he was #40. Obviously, they need to do something about that. If he’s one of 32 starters in the league he should at least get paid in the #30 range. Remember this is the guy who basically saved the Vikings season last year, leading them to like 6 straight victories after a disasterous start to the season. This is also the guy they felt so secure in that they were willing to trade Culpepper. And for that they are giving him punter money?

Deion Branch is going to be good in Seattle. I think the Seahawks may have paid a little too much to get him (2007 1st Rounder), but I think they felt they had to after that week 1 debacle. They miss Joey J (Jurevicius) and need a dependable guy who can get open nearly every down. That’s Branch. I think Seattle believes they are capable of getting back to the Super Bowl and giving up a 1st next year is worth it.

Sean Taylor is a scary guy. Unfortunately for the Redskins, I think he scares them nearly as much as his opponents. He gets a lot of penalties and he laid the lumber to his own players while trying to go for big hits. They may need to reel in that reckless abandon just a little.

Why is Aaron Brooks still a starting quarterback? Bet he makes more than Brad Johnson too.

If I was starting a tug-of-war team, Lorenzo Neal would be near the top of my wishlist. The guy is just built like a tank.
