Enjoying the new season of Contender

Posted by Adam on July 24th, 2006

I’m taking a home vacation this week - just chilling around the house - so I’m watching a lot of TV. Today I watched the first two episodes of this season’s Contender. So far I’m really impressed. The boxing is really good and the way it is shot and scored makes it look like a boxing movie without losing the real fight feel. They slow down the good hits and zoom in for the inside stuff. They most likely cut out some stuff too, but you don’t miss it. The matches are great.

Even if you don’t like boxing, it’s more fun than your normal reality show because at the end of the show two guys are going to beat the crap out of each other. Take the very first week. One guy runs his mouth the whole show. He says he wants to fight this other guy who he sees as weak, so he calls the man out. The match starts and the guy who got called out beats the living hell out of the trash-talker. And because I’m tired of hearing the guy talk, I’m on my feet cheering.

I didn’t watch last season because I don’t really like reality shows. But I decided to give it a try because I do like boxing and I’ve heard good things about the show. Plus, it’s on ESPN and they replay it 100 times a week making it easy for my TiVo to fit it into my Season Pass schedule. I’m glad I did because it’s great action without too much of the normal reality show junk.
