FOX joins the iTunes fray

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I’m a little surprised it took this long, but FOX has finally added some shows to the iTunes library. I find their choice of shows weird, though. 24 and Prison Break make sense because they are the type of shows, like LOST, that fans can’t bear to miss. Stacked and Unan1mous are the other new shows that they added. I can only assume these were added as a desperate attempt to boast ratings?

They also added a few so-called "FOX Television Classics" such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Lost in Space. I’m a little young for Lost in Space, but I know Buffy and Firefly are cult classics with a devoted fanbase. Still, I would expect most fans to simply buy the DVDs.

I’m most curious about the obvious lack of shows like Family Guy, Simpsons, and to a lesser extent, American Dad and King of the Hill. Family Guy and Simpsons both have HUGE fan followings, with a core demo that would seem like the most likely group of people to download TV shows and watch them on their iPods. I can only assume that they weren’t able to secure all the rights - with voice talent, writers, etc. - in time for the announcement. I have to believe they are coming.

But even though I’m a huge fan of Family Guy, I can’t see myself buying any episodes even if they did. Not until Apple gives you the ability to play the shows on your TV in high-def. $1.99 is way too much for a show that I can only watch on my iPod or on my computer in low-quality - especially when free, DVD-quality downloads are easily available elsewhere.
